Apply

To audition for Verdigris Ensemble, please submit:

  1. One-page Performance Resumé (PDF):

    • Music performance experience (repertoire, directors, ensembles, venues)

    • Musical training/background (degrees, teachers, mentors)

  2. Two Contrasting Solo Recordings:

    • One in a language you're fluent in

    • One in a language you're not fluent in

    • Choose pieces that showcase your voice's quality and flexibility

    • Non-classical repertoire is welcome

    • Submit via YouTube, Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar platforms

Phone/tablet recordings are acceptable. Provide title and composer for each piece. Selections should best demonstrate your vocal abilities and versatility.

Vocalists who advance will receive notification to participate in a live audition. The audition will require a solo chosen by the vocalist, 1-2 prepared choral works, and sight-reading.

Step 2:
Live Audition

Vocalists that progress beyond live auditions are put onto Verdigris Ensemble’s master roster.

The master roster is a curated list of qualified singers eligible for future ensemble projects. Roster membership includes:

  • Consideration for all ensemble projects

  • Complimentary admission to Verdigris Ensemble concerts

  • Invitations to ensemble events

  • Regular organizational updates

For each project, the artistic director selects singers based on the specific vocal requirements of the repertoire. Roster members may be invited to participate in full seasons, individual concerts, or may not be selected for a particular season.

Inclusion on the master roster eliminates the need for repeated auditions. Members remain eligible for future projects regardless of their participation in the current season.

 FAQs

  • At Verdigris Ensemble, we value vocalists with the following 4 qualities:

    • Vocal Excellence and Versatility: Strong sight-reading skills, pitch accuracy, and the ability to produce diverse vocal colors across various musical styles.

    • Innovative Spirit: Enthusiasm for exploring new musical and artistic territories and pushing the boundaries of traditional vocal performance.

    • Collaborative Professionalism: A team player with a positive attitude, reliability, and openness to creative processes and constructive feedback.

    • Compelling Artistry: Ability to convey emotion and storytelling through voice, with a passion for redefining vocal music through innovative performances.

  • Being on the master roster does not guarantee participation in every concert. For each project, vocalists are selected based on the specific vocal requirements of the repertoire. You may be invited to perform in a full season, individual concerts, or not be selected for a particular project. However, as a roster member, you remain eligible for consideration in all future projects without needing to re-audition.

  • Verdigris Ensemble welcomes vocalists from all backgrounds, and professional experience is not a prerequisite. Our selection process is strictly merit-based, focusing on vocal ability, musicianship, and the unique qualities each singer brings.

While a music degree is not required, candidates must demonstrate the capacity to handle our repertoire. We have a history of engaging singers at various stages in their musical journeys, including qualified college students.

What matters most is your current vocal proficiency and your ability to meet the demands of the programmed music. We encourage all skilled vocalists who align with our ensemble's vision to audition, regardless of their professional background.

  • Verdigris Ensemble maintains a flexible structure to meet the diverse needs of our projects. Our core group typically consists of 16 singers for main season performances, with the potential to expand to 24 for certain projects. Throughout the season, we also present additional events that may involve anywhere from 4 to 24 singers, depending on the specific requirements of each performance. This adaptable approach allows Verdigris Ensemble to tailor ensemble size to each project, ensuring we consistently deliver high-quality, innovative performances across varied repertoire and event types.

  • Verdigris Ensemble's schedule is structured around four main performances per season, complemented by 4-8 additional events annually. For our main performances, we typically hold 5-7 rehearsals, followed by a dress rehearsal, and culminating in three performances. These primary projects form the core of our season. Our additional events throughout the year are more compact, usually involving 0-2 rehearsals and 1-2 performances each.

  • Yes, Verdigris Ensemble is a paid opportunity for singers. Each project or season contract includes a compensation package tailored to the specific engagement. The details of these packages are clearly outlined in the individual contracts provided to selected singers.

As a professional organization, we are committed to fairly compensating our artists and have steadily raised rates every year since 2018.

  • Due to our condensed project schedules, Verdigris Ensemble requires full attendance from all singers for every rehearsal and performance. We cannot accommodate individual absences within a project.

However, we strive to plan our season mindfully, aiming to work with common conflicts in the professional music community. We encourage open communication about scheduling to help singers manage their various commitments effectively.
